In a dramatic twist of events, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has called for an anti-terror investigation into allegations that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal received political funding from the banned Sikhs For Justice group, founded by wanted terrorist Gurpatwant Pannun.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Kejriwal, swiftly responded, denouncing the call for a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as a "conspiracy" orchestrated by the BJP, labeling the Lieutenant Governor as an agent of the ruling party at the center.
The allegations come amidst an intense political battle between the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), just weeks before the national capital heads to the polls. These claims, rooted in a video allegedly showing Pannun declaring AAP's receipt of substantial funding from Khalistani groups, have been vehemently refuted by AAP senior leader Saurabh Bhardwaj.
In a detailed letter to the Union Home Secretary, Saxena cited the video, alleging that Kejriwal's party received $16 million in funding from Khalistani factions, with promises to facilitate the release of Devender Pal Bhullar in return.
Bhullar, a former professor convicted in the 1993 Delhi bomb blasts case, had his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment in 2001. Kejriwal himself is currently in jail over corruption charges related to the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam, a situation he and AAP attribute to political vendetta by the BJP.
While Kejriwal challenges his arrest in the Supreme Court, arguing a lack of evidence, the case continues to unfold against the backdrop of intense political rivalry and the upcoming Lok Sabha elections
