Action on Illegal Madrasas Sparks Political Debate in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, January 9: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defended the state government’s action against illegal madrasas, emphasizing its importance in preserving the cultural and spiritual identity of Uttarakhand as “Devbhoomi.” Responding to opposition criticism linking the move to electoral politics, BJP state spokesperson Vinod Suyal asserted that every moment is opportune for good governance and questioned the Congress’s stance on the issue.

Welcoming the state government’s initiative, Suyal expressed gratitude on behalf of the public to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami for his "alert and impactful decision." He reiterated that the BJP is committed to the twin goals of development and protecting the cultural heritage of Uttarakhand. “We will not compromise on the Devbhoomi identity. Those engaging in unlawful activities such as illegal madrasas, forced conversions, or other conspiracies aimed at altering the state's demographic fabric will not succeed,” Suyal stated.

He highlighted that previous decisions by CM Dhami have already set benchmarks for governance and are being viewed as examples by other states. “The cultural and spiritual essence of Uttarakhand is non-negotiable, and any attempt to disrupt it will be met with firm action,” he added.

Addressing opposition concerns about the timing of the action, Suyal dismissed the criticism as baseless and politically motivated. He called upon the Congress to clarify its position on the crackdown. “If Congress agrees with the move, they must support it unequivocally. If not, they should openly voice their opposition instead of confusing the public with irrelevant allegations about timing,” he said.

Accusing Congress of indulging in appeasement politics, Suyal remarked, “Congress has a history of making backdoor promises of appeasement while quietly issuing directives against Sanatan values. Their leaders are hesitant to publicly oppose such actions due to fear of backlash from the people of Devbhoomi. Instead, they attempt to divert attention by questioning the timing.”

The BJP maintains that the crackdown is a step toward safeguarding Uttarakhand’s traditions, asserting that it reflects the government’s commitment to both cultural preservation and legal governance. Meanwhile, the opposition’s reservations have sparked political debate, with the Congress being urged to take a clear stance on the matter.
