CM Dhami Accuses Congress of Distorting History, Calls for Unconditional Apology Over Ambedkar's Legacy

Dehradun, December 24: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of distorting facts for political gain. Speaking to the media in New Delhi, Dhami alleged that the Congress is twisting a statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament to suit its narrative. He claimed the party is engaging in divisive politics under the guise of honoring Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, despite its historical disregard for the architect of the Indian Constitution.

Dhami criticized the Congress for what he termed as “hypocrisy” over Ambedkar’s legacy. “This is the same Congress that consistently humiliated Dr. Ambedkar, denied him respect, and even forced him to resign from the Union Cabinet. They are now pretending to honor him, while their actions in history tell a different story,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister cited several instances of alleged mistreatment of Ambedkar by Congress leaders. He pointed out that Congress opposed Ambedkar's inclusion in the Constitution Drafting Committee and actively campaigned against him during elections in 1952 and 1954. “They never awarded him a Bharat Ratna during his lifetime and even denied the construction of memorials in his honor. It was the BJP government that established significant memorials, including in Nagpur and Mumbai, and transformed his London residence into a historical site,” Dhami said.

Highlighting the contributions of the Modi government, Dhami said the BJP had taken significant steps to preserve Ambedkar’s legacy, including creating memorials at his Delhi residence and establishing the Ambedkar International Centre. He contrasted this with Congress’s alleged neglect and focus on naming public spaces after the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Dhami also accused Congress of selectively presenting portions of Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent parliamentary speech, suggesting the party is using it to create a political narrative. “The people of India are wise and understand these tactics. Congress’s efforts to mislead the nation will not succeed,” he asserted.

The Chief Minister concluded by demanding an unconditional apology from Congress for its historical treatment of Ambedkar, stating that the party’s actions speak louder than its current rhetoric.

This exchange comes amid growing political tensions, with the BJP and Congress trading barbs over their interpretations of Ambedkar’s legacy and their respective contributions to social justice.
