Chennai, India (October 12, 2024): A speeding express train collided with a stationary goods train at Kavaraipettai near Gummidipoondi in the Chennai Division of Southern Railway on Friday night, resulting in the derailment of 13 coaches. Despite the dramatic impact, no casualties were reported.

The Mysuru-Darbhanga Express, traveling at a speed of 75 kmph, was given a green signal to proceed through the main line. However, the train unexpectedly entered the loop line and crashed into the rear of a parked goods train. The collision occurred around 8:30 PM, causing a parcel van to catch fire and sending several coaches off the tracks.

Southern Railway officials said that the train crew was safe and the fire in the parcel van was quickly extinguished. While some passengers sustained injuries, they were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue teams, including doctors and ambulances, arrived at the scene promptly to assist the affected individuals.

The accident has disrupted train services in both directions, and alternative arrangements are being made to accommodate passengers. Southern Railway has also established helpline numbers (044-25354151/044-24354995) for those seeking information or assistance.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. Initial reports suggest that a signal failure may have played a role, but authorities are still gathering details. This incident marks another train accident in India, following the tragic Balasore train crash in June 2023, which claimed the lives of nearly 300 people.

The derailment of 13 coaches in the Chennai express train accident is a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with rail travel. While it is fortunate that no fatalities were reported, the incident highlights the need for continued efforts to improve railway safety measures and prevent such accidents from happening in the future.
