Dehradun, December 19, 2024: A political storm erupted in Dehradun as Congress workers staged a protest at Ashley Hall Chowk, accusing Union Home Minister Amit Shah of making remarks in Parliament that allegedly insulted Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and the Constitution. The protest, organized under the leadership of Metropolitan Congress Committee President Dr. Jaswinder Singh Gogi, involved the symbolic burning of the Home Minister’s effigy.
Dr. Gogi, addressing the gathering, condemned the alleged remarks, claiming they reflect a lack of respect for Dr. Ambedkar's legacy among BJP leaders. He accused the BJP of invoking Ambedkar's name for political gains while being ideologically opposed to his ideas. “This statement exposes the BJP’s discomfort with Babasaheb’s principles. Their agenda to hollow out the Constitution has been evident since they came to power,” he said.
He further criticized the BJP for, in his words, fostering division under the guise of religion and distracting citizens from pressing issues. The Congress leader demanded an unconditional apology from the Home Minister to the nation and Parliament.
Senior Congress leaders, including Mathuradutt Joshi, Darshan Lal, Naveen Joshi, Madanlal, Dr. Pratima, and Sanjay Gautam, joined the protest alongside local representatives and party workers. The demonstration underscored the party’s commitment to taking the issue to a national platform, with plans for widespread protests in the coming days.
The BJP has yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations, but the incident has added fuel to ongoing debates surrounding the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar and the ideological divides in Indian politics. Observers anticipate further political escalation as Congress intensifies its campaign.
