India's Renewable Energy Capacity Surpasses 200 GW Mark

Mumbai, December 20, 2024 – In a major milestone for its clean energy ambitions, India’s renewable energy capacity has crossed the 200-gigawatt (GW) mark, solidifying its position as one of the global leaders in renewable energy production. The announcement comes as part of the government’s efforts to transition toward a low-carbon economy and meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Union Minister for Renewable Energy R.K. Singh highlighted that solar and wind energy accounted for over 70% of the capacity, with hydroelectric and biomass making up the rest. The government plans to increase this capacity to 500 GW by 2030.

“This achievement is a significant step in India’s journey toward energy independence and sustainability,” Singh said. He also announced plans for new offshore wind farms and green hydrogen projects to further diversify India’s energy mix.

International energy experts have praised India’s rapid progress, noting that investments in renewables have not only reduced dependence on fossil fuels but also created millions of green jobs. However, they emphasize the need for upgrading grid infrastructure to handle the growing capacity efficiently.

The milestone underscores India’s dual focus on economic growth and environmental stewardship, showcasing its potential to lead the global transition to renewable energy.
