New Delhi: Major Radhika Sen, a peacekeeper with the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is set to be honoured with the 2023 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award. This prestigious recognition will be presented by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Major Sen, who transitioned from a career in biotechnology to joining the Indian Army, has expressed profound fulfillment in her role, describing it as the best way to serve humanity and her country.
A Shift from Biotechnology to the Army
Major Sen, who graduated as a biotech engineer and was pursuing a Master's degree from IIT Bombay, decided to join the Army somewhat serendipitously. "I always wanted to serve humanity and India, but I always thought I would do it as a scientist," she explained. An application to the Service Selection Board (SSB) during her final year of college led to her unexpectedly clearing the process, and she chose to embark on a military career.
Challenges and Integration in Congo
During her tenure with the Organisation Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), Major Sen worked to integrate gender perspectives into peacekeeping activities. She highlighted the cultural and socio-economic complexities of the region, emphasizing that her experiences in the diverse environments of India and the Indian Army facilitated her ability to address these challenges effectively.
Addressing Gender Issues in Conflict
Major Sen underscored the importance of addressing gender issues in conflict zones, noting that women and girls are disproportionately affected by violence and abuse. "In any conflict, it is always the women and the girls who are more affected and who face increased risk of abuse. As women peacekeepers, we try and address their concerns and encourage them to raise their voices," she said. Her team engaged with local communities to create awareness about women's health, education on sexual violence, and to provide employment training and educational initiatives.
Dealing with Resistance and Misinformation
Despite their efforts, the peacekeepers sometimes faced hostility and misinformation. Major Sen recounted instances where they had to retreat from engagements due to stone-throwing by local residents. These challenges highlighted the importance of building trust and understanding within the communities they served.
Recognition and Gratitude
Major Sen expressed her gratitude for the support and opportunities provided by the Indian Army, which she credits for making her peacekeeping mission in Congo successful. "Being a part of India, which is a culturally rich and diverse country, and especially being a part of the Indian Army, helped. The support and cooperation of my soldiers motivated me and helped me to better understand the concerns of the people."
As she prepares to receive the Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award, Major Sen's journey from a biotech engineer to a celebrated peacekeeper serves as an inspiring testament to the diverse ways one can serve humanity and their nation
