MP Government Takes Bold Steps: Liquor Ban in 17 Religious Towns and New Initiatives for Farmers and Women

Bhopal, 24 January 2025: In a major decision reflecting the Madhya Pradesh government’s commitment to social and cultural values, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced a complete ban on liquor in 17 religious towns, including Ujjain. This historic decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held in Maheshwar, aligning with the government’s efforts to preserve the sanctity of religious sites and address public concerns about the growing menace of alcohol consumption.

The liquor ban is comprehensive, ensuring that liquor shops in these towns will not be relocated but permanently shut down. "This step underscores our dedication to respecting public sentiments and safeguarding our spiritual and cultural heritage," said BJP State President and Khajuraho MP Vishnudutt Sharma, expressing gratitude to the Chief Minister.

The decision is expected to curb addiction and enhance the spiritual and cultural atmosphere of these towns, supporting broader goals of social reform.

Ambedkar University to Become a Center of Excellence

The cabinet also approved ₹25 crore to develop the law faculty of Dr. Ambedkar University in Mhow, the birthplace of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, as a Center of Excellence. Recognizing Ambedkar's profound contribution to law and social justice, this initiative aims to honor his legacy and provide quality legal education.

Sharma criticized past governments, alleging neglect of Ambedkar’s contributions. "For decades, Dr. Ambedkar was denied the recognition he deserved, but under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, his ideals are being actively implemented," Sharma remarked.

In a related move, the state government recently renamed a flyover in Bhopal after Dr. Ambedkar to further commemorate his legacy.

Initiatives for Farmers and Women’s Empowerment

The cabinet also announced significant measures for farmers, including a scheme to provide solar pumps to those with temporary electricity connections for irrigation. Farmers using three to 7.5 horsepower pumps will receive a 10% subsidy on the cost of solar pumps. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of making farmers self-reliant.

Women’s empowerment received a substantial boost with new programs addressing key issues like maternal mortality, child marriage, and gender imbalance. The cabinet approved financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for widowed and abandoned women who remarry, aiming to provide them with a fresh start.

The government is also working on improving women’s economic empowerment through various schemes designed to create long-term positive impacts on society.

This flurry of decisions, taken on the occasion of the 300th birth anniversary of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, symbolizes the state’s commitment to upholding cultural traditions while fostering inclusive development.

These announcements come at a time when the state is making strides toward addressing critical social issues while promoting economic and cultural progress, signaling a holistic approach to governance in Madhya Pradesh.
