New Delhi, December 20, 2024 – Commuters in the National Capital Region (NCR) have a reason to celebrate as Delhi Metro inaugurated its newest phase, extending connectivity to towns like Sonipat, Manesar, and Baghpat. The expanded network, spanning 65 kilometers, aims to reduce travel time and ease congestion on Delhi’s roads.
The project, completed at a cost of ₹8,500 crore, includes state-of-the-art metro stations equipped with solar panels, AI-enabled ticketing systems, and enhanced security features. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who inaugurated the extension, called it a "game-changer" for regional connectivity.
“This new phase will not only benefit commuters but also spur economic activity in NCR towns by improving accessibility,” Kejriwal said during the launch ceremony.
Daily commuters, particularly office workers and students, have welcomed the development, with many citing reduced reliance on overcrowded buses and trains. Environmentalists have also praised the initiative for its focus on sustainable transport, as the new phase is powered entirely by renewable energy sources.
Urban planners view the extension as part of a broader strategy to integrate NCR’s infrastructure, addressing the challenges of urban sprawl and population growth. As Delhi Metro continues to expand, it cements its status as one of the largest and most efficient urban transit systems in the world.
