India has achieved a significant milestone in its defence capabilities with the successful test-firing of the air-surface anti-radiation missile 'Rudram-II' from a Su-30MKI fighter jet. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Rudram-II marks a new era in India's indigenous missile technology.
The recent flight test, which met all trial objectives, showcased the missile's advanced propulsion system and precise control and guidance algorithm. Rudram-II is specifically designed for Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) missions, targeting ground radars and communication stations with remarkable accuracy.
This latest version of Rudram comes four years after the successful test of its mark-1 predecessor by Su-30MKI, demonstrating India's continuous efforts to enhance its air defence capabilities. As an indigenously developed solid-propelled air-launched missile, Rudram-II is poised to replace the Russian Kh-31, further strengthening India's self-reliance in defence technology.
With its ability to detect and neutralize enemy assets from a range of altitudes, Rudram-II operates seamlessly in various weather conditions, making it a versatile asset for the Indian Armed Forces. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded DRDO, IAF, and the industry for this successful test, highlighting Rudram-II's role as a force multiplier in bolstering India's defence preparedness.
The Rudram missile series represents a leap forward in India's air defence capabilities, with Rudram-I showcasing its prowess with two seekers for target detection and classification. With a range of 100-150 km and speeds of Mach 2, Rudram-I has already demonstrated its effectiveness in previous tests.
Looking ahead, the Indian Air Force's proposed acquisition of the Next Generation Anti-Radiation Missile (NGARM) underscores India's commitment to advancing its air defence arsenal. Collaborations between DRDO and industry partners like Adani Defence signal a promising future for the mass production and deployment of Rudram missiles, further cementing India's position as a formidable force in the global defence landscape.
