AAP Leader Swati Maliwal Claims Party Pressured to Defame Her Amid Assault Case

New Delhi: AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Wednesday claimed that senior party leaders are under pressure to defame her amidst an ongoing assault case.

Ms. Maliwal, in a series of posts on X, alleged, "Yesterday, I received a call from a senior party leader who explained that there is significant pressure to speak against me and tarnish my reputation by leaking personal photos. Those supporting me are threatened with expulsion."

She detailed that various individuals have been tasked with holding press conferences, tweeting, and contacting overseas volunteers to dig up dirt against her. "Even some beat reporters close to the accused are reportedly preparing fake sting operations," she added.

Ms. Maliwal, asserting her resolve, stated, "I will face this alone because I have the truth on my side. The accused is a powerful man, and even top leaders are afraid to stand against him. I feel saddened that a woman minister from Delhi is tarnishing my character."

She concluded with, "I am fighting for my self-respect and will continue until justice is served. Despite being alone in this fight, I will not give up!"

The controversy escalated on May 18 when Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's close aide, Bibhav Kumar, was arrested for allegedly assaulting Ms. Maliwal at the Chief Minister's residence on May 13. He faces charges including molestation and attempted culpable homicide.

The FIR, filed at Civil Lines police station, includes charges under sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 341 (wrongful restraint), 354(B) (assault or use of criminal force to a woman with intent to disrobe), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
