Innovative Smart City Projects Turning Dehradun to a complexly new look and feel

Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is undergoing a transformative phase with multiple groundbreaking urban infrastructure projects. These initiatives, driven by innovation and sustainability, not only address the city's immediate needs but also pave the way for a smarter and more accessible urban environment.

Child-Friendly Urban Mobility:

One of the projects, "Child-friendly urban mobility," is set to revolutionize the existing public transport system in Dehradun. With a focus on ensuring safety and convenience for commuters, especially school children, this initiative is supported by Agence Francaise De Developpement (AFD) and is part of the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS) program.

Given that Dehradun is India's education capital, boasting over 300 schools, the initiative addresses the challenges posed by congested roads, unruly traffic, and heavy monsoon rains. The goal is to create a safer and more efficient public transportation system, encouraging a shift to active modes of transportation like walking and cycling. The project aims to improve first and last-mile connectivity, upgrade infrastructure, and develop an e-app to facilitate the commute for residents, students, and tourists.

External Project for Urban Development:

In a significant move, Dehradun has secured approval from the Department of Economic Affairs for a Rs 1,400 crore external project. This project aims to expand the strategic components of area-based development (ABD) in the smart city to the entire Nagar Nigam Dehradun. It marks a crucial step in the city's growth and development, with a focus on retrofitting, redevelopment, and greenfield development.

Dehradun's distinction lies in being the first smart city to receive approval for such an external project from the Central government. This initiative aligns with the broader Smart Cities Mission, which set a deadline for completion by June 2023 for all 100 smart cities across India.

Challenges and Progress:

Despite these promising developments, challenges such as administrative slackness and coordination issues may pose a threat to meeting the June 2023 deadline. Some ongoing projects, including the revamp of central Paltan Bazaar and the Parade Ground rejuvenation, are facing delays. However, efforts are underway to expedite the completion of these projects, ensuring the city's continued progress toward becoming a smarter and more efficient urban center. While the date to the deadline gets pushed to June of 2024

Paltan Bazaar Facade Remodeling:

One of the prominent initiatives under the Smart City Mission involves the remodeling of over 1,000 shops in central Paltan Bazaar. This ambitious project, costing Rs 4.8 crore, aims to give the market a cohesive and uniform facade. The chosen theme of orange adds vibrancy to the bustling marketplace. Commencing with the finalization of the tender, work has already commenced at several shops, marking the beginning of a visually unified and rejuvenated commercial hub.

Parade Ground Rejuvenation:

The Parade Ground rejuvenation project, though experiencing delays, remains a significant undertaking in Dehradun's urban transformation. State officials express optimism that 90% of the Smart City project work at Parade Ground will be completed before Republic Day. Despite the challenges, this project underscores the commitment to revitalize key public spaces, providing residents with well-maintained areas for recreation and community events.

Araghar Area Revamp and New Roads:

The Araghar area is witnessing a substantial facelift under the Smart City project, with about a hundred shops revamped to align with the city's evolving aesthetic. Furthermore, the introduction of new roads with underground channels for cables and connections demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure development. This strategy not only addresses immediate needs but also anticipates future challenges, ensuring a more sustainable and resilient urban environment.

Challenges and Triumphs:

The Smart City Mission in Dehradun, initiated in 2017 with a budget exceeding Rs 1400 crore, faces challenges typical of large-scale urban development. The revitalization projects aim to improve the city's overall aesthetic, functionality, and infrastructure. Despite occasional delays, officials remain committed to the June 2023 deadline for Smart City Mission projects, reflecting the dedication to ensuring timely completion.

Standardization of Themes:

A noteworthy aspect of the Smart City transformation is the introduction of color themes in different areas. Paltan Bazaar embraces the vibrant hue of orange, harmonizing with the theme of Hanuman Mandir. In the Araghar area, a maroon color theme with traditional designs is being implemented. This standardization not only enhances visual appeal but also contributes to a cohesive and well-planned urban landscape.

Despite delays, the Dehradun Smart City project has revitalized key areas, introduced forward-thinking infrastructure, and created a visually cohesive cityscape. Success in Paltan Bazaar, Parade Ground, and Araghar showcases resilience and sets a precedent for future urban development. Despite setbacks, the positive impact on residents and the city's evolving identity highlights the effectiveness of well-planned initiatives.
