Bollywood Boom: How India's Film Industry Transcends Borders, Shaping Global Pop Culture

Abstract

India has a long-standing film industry centered in Mumbai, known as Bollywood, and is by far the largest film producer in the world. As Indian cinema continues to expand its global reach, this study examines the Indian-film fever that has developed over the past decade in the emerging market of China. This article examines the key factors that attract Chinese audiences to Indian films and examines the opportunities and challenges that Indian cinema faces in China. Drawing on the stories of local audiences, data was collected from semi structured interviews of 32 Indian-film audience members living in 14 different cities across China's mainland. Thematic analysis revealed five appealing factors that explain why the Chinese love Indian movies: content-driven stories, social values, celebrity appeal, audience reviews, and cultural connections. A comprehensive list of opportunities for Bollywood in China was derived from this analysis, but the results also revealed that China's unique institutional context and India-China geopolitical tensions add to the complexity of films' success in China.
