In a tragic incident, a 40-year-old senior officer of the Cantonment Board in Belagavi was discovered dead at his official residence on Saturday, with authorities suspecting suicide.
The news came to light after the gardener and house-helper, who were employed at the officer's residence, noticed that the main door had remained closed since Thursday evening. Concerned by the silence, they alerted the police to investigate.
According to Camp Police Inspector Altaf Mull, a team of officers entered the victim's official residence in the Camp area on Saturday morning after breaking open the closed door. The grim discovery revealed the officer's lifeless body lying on the bed, with blood emanating from his mouth. Beside him, a bottle of poison and a paper note were found, suspected to contain the reasons behind his tragic end.
A case under section 174 (c) of CrPC, related to inquiries into unnatural deaths, has been registered, the police reported.
"We have found a death note in his bedroom, which has been sent for verification to the Forensic Investigation Laboratory in Bengaluru, along with some of his handwritten papers. We cannot disclose the contents of the note until the verification is complete," stated Belagavi Police Commissioner SN Siddaramappa.
The officer is believed to have taken his own life on Thursday night or Friday, given the advanced state of decomposition observed during the discovery. The police commissioner highlighted that bodies typically start to emit an odor after 24 hours.
Following the autopsy, the victim's body was transported to Bengaluru, where his parents received it on Saturday evening. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities awaiting the results of the forensic analysis to shed light on the circumstances leading to this tragic event
